Full Breakdown
Section 209-17.2, Permit Parking, was added 3-14-83 by Ord. No. 83-498 and amended 11-28-11 by Ord. No. 11-21. Under subsection A, no motor vehicle can be parked on the designated streets on a daily basis during the scheduled hours unless the vehicle is owned or operated on a regular basis by a resident of the street and has a current residential parking permit displayed on its left rear window where a police officer can closely examine it. East Brunswick Rescue Squad members in the designated area of the Rescue Squad Headquarters display a valid Rescue Squad identity plate instead. Visitor permits hang from the rear view mirror or sit on the dashboard.
Subsection B exempts three groups. A visitor with a current visitor permit can park if the operator is a bona fide guest of a resident within the permit parking area. Contractors, service and delivery vehicles bearing the name and address of a commercial business can park without a permit during the time they are rendering the service to residents in the area. Emergency vehicles and public service, telephone and other public utility vehicles can park while rendering services or repairs.
Permits come from the Special Operations Division of the Department of Public Safety, on written forms. A resident gets a permanent permit valid for two years for every vehicle owned or principally operated by that person. Each residential unit also gets two visitor hang-tag permits, valid for two years. The application is signed, lists the date of issue, name, address and telephone number, and carries a paragraph stating that permits are revoked for misrepresentation, misuse or abuse. A valid registration and plate number is required for each residential permit, but not for visitor permits. The street list itself lives in Schedule A, described in Schedule XXIX, not in § 209-17.2.
Violations & Fines
Subsection D sets the penalty: conviction in the East Brunswick Municipal Court carries a fine not exceeding $100, and a separate offense is deemed committed on each day during or on which a new violation occurs or continues. Permits are revoked for misrepresentation, misuse or abuse, as the application itself warns.
