Full Breakdown
Section 191-1 of the Town of Babylon Code requires every owner, lessee, tenant or occupant to clear snow, ice, dirt or other material from the sidewalk fronting their property within four hours after snow stops falling, with the 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. period excluded from that clock. If snow or ice is frozen solid, the property owner must spread ashes, sand, sawdust or similar material and finish cleaning as soon as the weather allows. Business and industrial district property owners, plus owners of multiple dwellings with three or more units, are expressly liable for injuries caused by failing to clear the walk.
Violations & Fines
No chapter-specific fine is set for § 191-1, so the Code's general penalty applies: $250 to $2,500 and up to 15 days in jail per § 1-15A, on top of civil liability for any resulting injury.
