Oak Park, IL Property Maintenance: Snow & Sidewalk Clearing (2026)

Under Village Code, Oak Park property owners and occupants are responsible for removing snow and ice from public sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours after snowfall ceases. Sidewalks must be cleared to a minimum width of 5 feet to allow safe pedestrian passage, including wheelchair access. Ice that cannot be fully removed must be treated with salt, sand, or ice melt to prevent hazardous conditions. Property owners are also responsible for clearing snow from fire hydrants near their property. The village handles snow plowing on public streets, with priority given to major arterial roads and bus routes followed by residential streets. Residents should not push or blow snow from driveways or sidewalks into the street. Snow cannot be deposited on neighboring properties without permission. During heavy snowfall events, the village may declare a snow emergency restricting on-street parking to allow plowing.
