Brentwood, CA Public Conduct: Jaywalking (2026)

020 is Brentwood's version of a right-angle crossing rule: outside a marked crosswalk, a pedestrian may only cross a roadway by a route that runs at right angles to the curb or by the shortest practical route to the opposite curb, which rules out diagonal or angled jaywalking between intersections. 010 gives the city engineer authority to establish and mark crosswalks at intersections and elsewhere, and sets a floor for midblock crosswalks: outside of intersections, no crosswalk may be installed on a block shorter than four hundred feet, and any midblock crosswalk the city engineer does install must sit as near as practicable to the middle of the block.

050 gives the city separate authority to prohibit pedestrians from crossing at any specific location it determines to be unsafe for pedestrian movement, regardless of whether the crossing would otherwise satisfy the right-angle rule. Together the sections steer pedestrians toward marked crosswalks and away from diagonal shortcuts or lingering in traffic lanes anywhere in the city.
