West Jordan, UT Public Conduct: Outdoor Smoking Restrictions (2026)

Unlike some cities' park-wide smoking bans, West Jordan's rule in section 8-13-8 targets specific fixed seating rather than every square foot of park property. It is unlawful to smoke while sitting or standing on the bleachers of the rodeo arena at Veterans Memorial Park, home to the city's Western Stampede rodeo events, and the same ban extends to any other bleachers or publicly owned seating located in any other West Jordan park. The prohibition also creates a 30-foot buffer: smoking is banned not only on the seating itself but within thirty feet of it, so a smoker standing near, but not on, a set of park bleachers is still in violation.

The section does not restrict smoking on open lawns, trails, or picnic areas away from fixed seating; the ban is keyed specifically to bleachers and publicly-owned seating structures. The rule dates to the 2001 code and was carried forward, with amendments in 2009 and again in the 2015 and 2019 parks-chapter overhauls, without changing the 30-foot measurement. Enforcement follows the rest of chapter 8-13: the city administrator can adopt implementing regulations under section 8-13-7, and park staff or police can act on a visible violation without a separate complaint process.
