West Jordan, UT Public Conduct: Public Alcohol Use (2026)

West Jordan's parks ordinance, chapter 8-13, lists prohibited alcohol use among twenty-five lettered prohibited activities that apply throughout city parks and recreational facilities. Subsection (B) reaches both consumption and mere possession: a person breaks the rule by simply carrying an open or unopened beer or other alcoholic beverage onto park property, not only by drinking it. 'City park' is defined broadly in section 8-13-1 to include athletic fields, pavilions, picnic areas, concession stands, traveled ways, sidewalks, parking lots, restrooms, and tot lots, so the ban follows visitors across every part of the grounds, not just open lawns.

The single carve-out is for a special event that is the subject of a single event permit granted under city code; special events are scheduled through the special event permit rules, policies, and procedures the city administrator prescribes under section 8-13-3(B)(3), and a beer garden or similar alcohol service at a festival or wedding reception has to be built into that specific permit before it is lawful. Absent that paperwork, the prohibition is absolute and applies to any city park, from Veterans Memorial Park to a neighborhood tot lot, and to city recreational facilities such as the arena. The rule sits alongside related bans on gambling, fireworks, dangerous weapons, and unpermitted camping in the same section, all enforced the same way.
