Bristol, CT Public Conduct: Public Alcohol Use (2026)

Section 15-47 makes it unlawful to consume alcoholic liquor or possess an open container of it on or within any public highway, public area, or public parking area in the City of Bristol, and it expressly reaches a parked vehicle sitting on a public lot, highway, or sidewalk. Section 15-46 defines 'open container' broadly: any open bottle, a bottle whose liquor tax stamp seal is broken, an opened can, a tapped keg or dispensing device, or any glass, cup, or jar. 'Public area' is defined just as broadly at section 15-46 to include parks, plazas, malls, stadiums, and cemeteries, and it specifically sweeps in school yards, ball fields, and any property run by the board of education or the parks department, a status that survives even if the area is closed by curfew.

Section 15-48 carves out one exception: consumption and open containers are allowed for people who have turned 21 during a city-sponsored or permitted event tied to the Rockwell Theater at the Bristol Arts and Innovation Magnet School, or any other function, festival, or celebration where a permit authorizes liquor sale and consumption on that public highway, area, or lot. Section 15-49 sets the penalty as an infraction fined $90.00 under the general Code fine schedule at section 1-11.
