Gardena, CA Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Section 10.40.060 predates modern skateboards by name but its language, roller skates and coaster, toy vehicle, or similar device, reaches the same wheeled recreational equipment residents and merchants ask about today. The ban has two separate zones. First, no one on roller skates or riding a coaster, toy vehicle or similar device may go on any roadway, or on the sidewalks or public areas within any business district, anywhere in the city. Second, the same equipment is barred everywhere inside the Civic Center complex at 1700 West 162nd Street, regardless of whether that spot sits in a business district.

The rule traces to a 1999 amendment, Ordinance 1567, layered onto the older prior code § 3-1.12, and it sits in Chapter 10.40's miscellaneous traffic rules alongside the separate ban on clinging to moving vehicles while riding a bicycle, motorcycle, coaster, roller skates or toy vehicle under § 10.40.070. Neither section carries its own fine, so enforcement runs through the citywide general penalty in § 1.16.010: violations of Title 10's traffic provisions are infractions unless the code states otherwise, with escalating fines for repeat violations within a year and a fourth violation chargeable as a misdemeanor.

The Gardena Police Department, not Community Development, is the agency that cites roadway and sidewalk skating and coasting violations, since the rule sits in the traffic title rather than the park-rules title.
