Perth Amboy, NJ Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

The rule sits in Chapter 386, Streets and Sidewalks, Article II, Street and Sidewalk Obstructions, and it reaches every public sidewalk in the City of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, not only the downtown business blocks. Subsection C lists conduct prohibited on a sidewalk, and item (4) covers riding a scooter, roller skates or skateboard. Item (3) separately bars riding a bicycle on any public sidewalk, so the code treats wheeled devices together.

Two carve-outs matter. Under Subsection D(3), the bicycle, scooter, roller skate and skateboard prohibitions do not apply to any person under the age of 12, and they do not apply to any person skating in a controlled manner on the public sidewalk so as to fit with the flow of pedestrians. Under D(4), the prohibitions in C(4), C(6) and C(9) do not apply to duly licensed sidewalk cafes.

Enforcement is set by § 386-2. The Department of Code Enforcement, the Department of Public Works and all City of Perth Amboy police officers are authorized to issue summons for violation of any provision of the chapter. Subsection E sets the money penalties, and the same subsection prints two different figures for item (4), which is covered in the violations field below.

Other items in Subsection C sit beside the skateboard rule and apply on the same sidewalks: parking a motorized vehicle on the public sidewalk, lying on it, sitting on it for more than one hour in any two-hour time period, and allowing belongings to remain unattended for more than 15 minutes.
