Piscataway, NJ Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Section 3-19, added by Ordinance No. 07-31, is a short rule inside Chapter 3's police regulations. Subsection a prohibits skateboarding on any municipal property outright, unless the Township has posted signage allowing it there, giving Township officials discretion to designate specific spots, such as a skate area, where the sport is permitted. Subsection b is narrower but absolute: no one may operate or cause to be operated a skateboard, roller skates or in-line skates in any parking area the Township of Piscataway owns, with no signage exception at all for parking lots.

Because § 3-19 sets out no penalty of its own, an officer citing a violation falls back on the Chapter 1, § 1-5 general penalty, which lets the Municipal Court impose a fine of up to $2,000, imprisonment in the county jail for up to 90 days, or community service for up to 90 days, in any combination. A second violation of the same provision within a year of a prior fine also draws an additional, separately calculated fine as a repeat offender under § 1-5.4.

The rule sits among other Chapter 3 restrictions on the use of municipal land, including the motor-driven-vehicle ban at § 3-15 and the ban on selling vehicles on municipal land at § 3-16, all enforced by the Piscataway Police Department.
