Full Breakdown

City code Sec. 16-13.1 makes it unlawful to ride a skateboard, roller skates, coaster, or similar recreational device on any sidewalk or pedestrian walkway in a business district or along a through street. A companion rule, Sec. 16-13, bars roller skates, coasters, or similar devices from getting onto any roadway at all, except while crossing at a crosswalk or on streets the city council has specifically designated as play streets. Skateboards aren't listed as vehicles entitled to use the roadway, so riders are effectively limited to ordinary sidewalks outside business districts and through-street frontages.

Violations & Fines

Violating either section is a Code violation under Sec. 1-9, punishable by a fine of $50 to $750, or reasonable public service work such as litter pickup, or both; each day a continuing violation persists is a separate offense.
