Bristol, CT Public Health Rules: Food Handler Certification (2026)

Code of Ordinances § 9-1, unchanged since the 1960 Code recodification at former § 7-8, sets two conditions on food service work in Bristol. First, anyone employed as a food handler must undergo whatever physical examination the health department requires before starting work. Second, no one may be employed without actually holding a food handler's certificate, but only in an establishment that meets the Code's definition of 'restaurant' in section 9-45. That cross-reference points to Article III of Chapter 9, which the current Code lists only as 'Secs.

9-44-9-52. - Reserved,' with an editor's note explaining that a February 4, 1975 ordinance repealed the former § 7-7 from which those sections were derived. Chapter 9 cross-references Chapter 11, Health and Sanitation, and Chapter 13, Licenses and Miscellaneous Business Regulations, for the city's broader food-service licensing and sanitation framework, and the chapter's state-law reference notes the city's underlying authority to regulate under General Statutes § 7-194(44), the general grant of power to provide for the health of city inhabitants. Because § 9-1 was never itself repealed or amended, the physical-exam and certificate requirements remain in force even though the definitional section they point to no longer carries text.
