Lawton, OK Public Health Rules: Food Handler Certification (2026)

Section 12-1-104(E) of the Lawton City Code requires every food employee to carry a food handler's certification issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Health on the city's behalf before working in any food-service establishment, whether fixed, mobile, temporary or seasonal. A newly hired employee has thirty calendar days from the date of hire to obtain it, and can satisfy the requirement either by attending a health-and-sanitation class offered by the health department or by completing an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) certified online course. Applications go through the city's building division, and the certificate issues only after the class is finished and the fee in the city's fee schedule is paid; it then expires two years from issuance.

Section 12-1-104(F) makes the employer side of the rule enforceable too: no operator may hire, keep employed, or allow to work gratis, any food employee lacking a current, unrevoked certification, and a legible copy of each employee's certification must stay on the premises, available for inspection by city, county or state officials during normal operating hours. Section 12-1-105 lets the city suspend or revoke a certification under the procedure in Section 7-1-1-112, and Section 12-1-109(D) directs that if a health department inspection turns up an expired or missing certification, the health department notifies the city code administrator, who then determines what enforcement is warranted.
