California AB 1482 entitles many Stockton tenants to relocation assistance equal to one months rent when displaced by a no-fault eviction. The assistance can be paid directly or applied as a credit against the final months rent.
When a covered Stockton landlord ends a tenancy under AB 1482 for a no-fault reason, the displaced tenant is generally entitled to relocation assistance equal to one months rent at the contract rate. The landlord can pay this assistance directly within roughly 15 days after serving the notice, or alternatively waive the final months rent in writing as a substitute. The notice must inform the tenant of the right to relocation assistance and the specific option chosen. If the landlord fails to provide the assistance, the no-fault eviction is void and the tenant can defend any unlawful detainer action on that basis. Higher local relocation amounts can apply if Stockton enacts them in the future.
Failing to pay relocation assistance, or omitting it from the notice, can void the eviction, leave the landlord without legal possession, and create liability for damages and tenant attorney fees in some cases.
