Rent increases exceeding the AB 1482 cap are void to the extent they exceed the allowable amount. Tenants may file complaints with the California Department of Justice or pursue civil remedies. Landlords who collect excess rent may be required to refund the overpayment. Tenants may also recover damages in civil court.
