Wellington, FL Sign Regulations: Digital Billboards (2026)

Under Land Development Regulations Sec. 7.9.8.B.2.d, a digital sign may only be incorporated into a monument sign, and only at sites with gasoline sales or community facilities land uses; digital displays are not authorized as freestanding electronic billboards elsewhere in the village. Where permitted, the digital component must have automatic dimming that measures and adjusts brightness to ambient light, and brightness cannot exceed 0.3 foot-candles above ambient light levels measured 100 feet from the sign face at six feet above grade, with light-level readings submitted in writing to the planning and zoning division before the building permit is approved.

The display cannot flash, scroll, show intermittent light, or animate; any change to the electronic display must occur simultaneously across the entire electronic area. Every message must hold for a minimum of ten seconds before changing. Lettering or graphics are restricted to white or red on a black, non-lighted background, and the electronic display area cannot push the total sign area of the monument sign past 32 square feet. The same digital-sign standards in subsections 2.c and 2.d also govern digital auxiliary ground signs at drive-thru lanes under Sec.

7.9.8.B.4.b. All permanent signs, including any with a digital component, require a sign permit under Sec. 7.9.9, reviewed by Wellington's planning and zoning division through its electronic review portal, with a ten-business-day initial review period.
