Camarillo, CA Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Camarillo's commercial sign table at Section 17.04.110(B) sets a standard 25-foot height cap on a shopping center's freestanding identification sign, but carves out an exception for centers near the Ventura Freeway: a shopping center within 150 feet of U.S. Highway 101 that contains more than 225,000 square feet of building area can build its freestanding sign up to 35 feet tall, ten feet taller than anywhere else in the city, so it can be read from freeway speed. The same table lets a center that large, and that close to the freeway, identify up to five major tenants on the sign, one more than the four allowed at a smaller center, and requires at least 500 feet of separation between identification signs on the same street frontage within that shopping center.

Gasoline service stations get a comparable freeway bonus under Section 17.04.110(G). A station located within 1,000 feet of a freeway interchange centerline, or within 500 feet of a freeway centerline where direct access is provided, can install one freestanding sign in place of the standard 8-foot monument sign, and that freestanding sign can rise to 25 feet with up to 50 square feet of area per face, double the monument sign's 36-square-foot cap. Outside of these two freeway-proximity carve-outs, the general rule for an individual commercial parcel under Section 17.04.110(A) still caps a freestanding sign at 25 feet, so the extra height in both provisions exists specifically because of freeway visibility, not ordinary street frontage.
