Fresno, CA Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Free-standing advertising near Fresno's freeway network is tightly restricted under Section 15-2610 of the Citywide Development Code. Pole signs are capped at one per 600 feet of street frontage, must sit at least 75 feet from any other pole sign, and require a 10-foot setback from the property line, but that setback becomes an outright ban within 660 feet of the nearest travel lane of Freeway 41, Freeway 180, Freeway 168, or any future freeway opened to public travel, so long as the sign is visible from the roadway.

Height is scaled to the size of the business and the classification of the adjacent street: a building with 300,000 or more square feet of floor area on a freeway-classified street can support a 90-foot pole sign, while a business under 100,000 square feet is capped at 40 feet on that same corridor. Monument signs follow a parallel but narrower rule, limited to 60 square feet in RMX, CR, CG, CH, and RBP districts (32 square feet elsewhere), capped at 8 feet in height (5 feet in Downtown districts), and likewise barred within 660 feet of Freeway 41's nearest travel lane if visible from it.

Both sign types must also clear landscaping, minimum-separation, and lighting-intensity standards (100 foot-Lamberts on lower-intensity streets, 500 on brighter ones) before the Planning Division approves them. Because the Development Code was added by Ordinance 2015-39 and has since been amended through Ordinance 2018-25, any freeway-adjacent sign proposal has to be checked against the current, amended text of Section 15-2610.
