Fresno allows up to six hens (no roosters) on single-family residential lots under FMC Β§9-2801, with coops set back at least 10 feet from property lines and 25 feet from neighboring dwellings. Larger livestock such as goats, sheep, pigs, and cattle are only allowed on properties zoned for agriculture or rural residential (minimum 0.5 acre for small goats).
FMC Chapter 9 Article 28 regulates keeping of animals. In standard single-family residential zones (R-1), up to six hens are permitted with no roosters. Hens must be kept in a predator-proof coop or enclosure set back at least 10 feet from side and rear property lines and at least 25 feet from any neighboring dwelling or commercial kitchen. Coops must be kept clean, dry, and odor-free. Dressing, slaughter, or sale of chickens is not permitted in residential zones. Feed must be stored in rodent-proof containers. Goats, sheep, pigs, cattle, and horses are only allowed in AE (Agricultural Exclusive), RE (Rural Estate), and similar zones with parcels generally 0.5 acre or larger depending on species (larger for horses and cattle). Roosters, peafowl, and guinea fowl are prohibited in residential zones because of noise (FMC Β§9-2701). Nuisance violations can trigger removal orders from Fresno Animal Services.
