Garage sale signs in Davis are temporary signs regulated under Chapter 3 (Advertising) of the Davis Municipal Code. A one-day-event sign, not exceeding nine square feet, may be posted in the public right-of-way on the day of the event but must come down within 24 hours.
DMC Chapter 3 defines a temporary sign as a sign, handbill, or poster placed to advertise a specific event, expressly listing garage sales, concerts, and swap meets as examples. Temporary signs for one-day events such as open houses and garage sales, not exceeding nine square feet in total area, may be posted in the public right-of-way only on the day of the event, and must be removed no later than 24 hours after it ends. Other temporary signs must be removed within five calendar days after the event. Signs posted in violation may be removed summarily by the city as public nuisances. Retrieving a removed sign requires a small administrative fine (about $2 per small sign, $10 per larger sign).
Garage sale signs exceeding nine square feet, posted before the event day, left up past 24 hours after the sale, or affixed to prohibited right-of-way structures may be removed by the city. Retrieval requires paying the administrative fine.
