Las Cruces caps garage and yard sale signs at 3 square feet. Under Land Development Code Sec. 36-84, off-premises directional signs are allowed only during the sale, and both the person who posts them and the property owner must remove them afterward.
Land Development Code Sec. 36-84 covers garage, private sale, and event signs. Off-premises signs may advertise a garage or yard sale only if they are not over 3 square feet and are used only for the duration of the event (36-84(a)). Both the person erecting the sign and the property owner at the sign's location are responsible for its removal (36-84(b)). Signs may not be attached to retaining walls, fences, rocks, or natural features (Sec. 36-10(e)), nor made to resemble government signs or placed to obstruct traffic sight lines. A compliant sale sign needs no permit.
Signs over 3 square feet, signs left up after the sale, or signs attached to utility poles, fences, or public property violate Chapter 36; the city can remove them and cite both the poster and the property owner.
