Newark, OH Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 836.06 of the Newark Code of Ordinances, part of the home sale chapter adopted by the Newark City Council, governs the signs and placards that promote or direct buyers to a garage sale, yard sale or street sale. Subsection (b) covers any sign, placard or other advertising, and each of three conditions has to be met.

First, placement. The sign goes only on the property where the home sale or street sale is taking place. A sign on any other property needs the prior written consent of the owner or owners of that property. Second, the right of way. A sign cannot sit in a public right of way, and it cannot be attached to any pole, building, temporary or permanent structure, device, tree or other object within the public right of way. Utility poles, street trees and traffic sign posts in the right of way are therefore off limits. Third, timing. The sign is first erected not earlier than 9:00 a.m. on the beginning date of the sale and removed not later than 8:00 p.m. on the last date, as authorized under the permit issued under Chapter 836.

Subsection (a) adds a related display rule: no person can place or display property to be sold in front of the building set-back line of the sale location, and the set-back line is determined from the zoning laws in force at the time of the sale. A home sale lasts no more than five consecutive calendar days under Section 836.05, so the window for signs follows the dates on the permit from the Director of Public Service. Under Section 836.09, each person who conducts a sale is deemed to know the chapter's requirements, and the permit application includes a signed acknowledgment of them.
