Pottstown, PA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 702 of the Zoning Code defines a 'yard sale sign' as a temporary sign advertising a yard or garage sale, and Section 706 places yard sale signs on the list of signs 'allowed without a sign permit' and not counted toward a property's other sign allowances. That permit exemption, however, doesn't help a resident in the wrong zoning district: Section 500's miscellaneous regulations flatly prohibit 'yard sales located on and associated with residentially used properties (including the adjacent sidewalks)' in the Downtown (D), Gateway East (GE) and Gateway West (GW) districts, meaning both the sale and any sign advertising it are off-limits there regardless of size or duration.

Outside those three districts, a yard sale sign still has to clear the borough's general sign placement rules in Section 704, which apply to every sign whether or not it needs a permit: no attaching a sign to a utility pole, parking meter, traffic signpost, traffic signal, street sign or historical marker, no attaching to trees or shrubs, and no placement in the public right-of-way except for a short list of exempted sign types that does not include yard sale signs. A yard sale sign posted at the curb or wired to a stop sign, in other words, is a Section 704 violation even though no permit was ever required for it.

Because Section 702 defines the sign as temporary, leaving it up well past the sale date can also be treated as a nonconforming or improperly maintained sign under the Part's general upkeep rules.
