Pottstown, PA Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Section 702 of the Zoning Code defines a political sign as a temporary sign relating to the election of a person to public office, a political party, or a matter to be voted upon at an election by the public, distinguishing it from the code's separate 'personal expression sign' category, which covers opinion signs that are not political. Section 706 then lists political signs among the signs 'allowed without a sign permit,' meaning no application, fee or Zoning Officer review is required, and the sign doesn't count toward the number or area of other signs allowed on the property.

That exemption is expressly made 'subject to the restrictions in Section 712,' the borough's Sign Uses and Restrictions charts, and it does not override Section 704's list of unlawful placements, which applies to every sign type in the Borough. Section 704 bars any sign attached to rocks, utility poles, parking meters, traffic signposts, traffic signals or control devices, street signs, or historical markers, bars signs affixed to trees or shrubs, and bars anything that obstructs a driver's or pedestrian's clear view. Section 704 also keeps signs out of the public right-of-way altogether except for a short list of permitted types (sandwich boards, projecting signs and on-premises civic event signs), a list that does not include political signs, so a lawn sign belongs on private property rather than the curb strip or sidewalk verge.
