Vallejo, CA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 16.509.03, Signs and Sign Changes Permitted Without Sign Permit, lists narrow sign types the city lets residents and businesses post without going through the sign permit process in Chapter 16.509, and garage sale signs are one of them. Subsection (E) allows exactly one garage sale sign, capped at four square feet, and it has to sit at the residence where the sale is actually happening, not at a nearby intersection or on a neighbor's lawn. That placement limit matters because Section 16.509.07(B) separately makes it a public nuisance, prosecuted as an infraction, to tack, post, or affix any sign, including handbills and posters, to a utility pole, tree, or other structure in the public right-of-way without the owning agency's written authorization, and each such posting counts as a separate violation.

A garage sale sign that exceeds four square feet, or that a seller stakes at a street corner instead of the sale address, loses the permit exemption and becomes subject to the general sign permit and building permit rules in Sections 16.509.01 and 16.509.02, including the requirement that any sign over six feet tall or requiring an electrical connection get a building permit. Every sign in the city, garage sale signs included, must also stay in good structural condition under Section 16.509.01(J), and the code enforcement officer has authority to order removal of any sign that becomes dilapidated, hazardous, or abandoned.
