Woodbury, MN Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Sec. 5-19 lists signs exempt from Woodbury's general sign permit requirement in Sec. 5-16, and item (8) covers garage and yard sale signs specifically. The ordinance allows three off-site signs directing traffic to the sale plus one on-site sign at the sale address itself, four signs in total. Every one of those signs is capped at 6 square feet in area and 4 feet in height, and each must be placed at least 5 feet back from the curb or shoulder of the road so it doesn't create a sightline or right-of-way hazard.

The ordinance also builds in a time limit two ways: signs may only be displayed during the term of the sale itself and must come down once the sale is over, and the exemption only covers sales at locations within the City of Woodbury, so a resident cannot use this exemption to advertise a sale happening in a neighboring city like Cottage Grove or Oakdale. Because garage sale signs fall under the permit-not-required list, a host does not need to file a sign permit application or pay the fee that otherwise applies under Sec.

5, including the ban on placing off-site signs in the public right-of-way found in Sec. 5-44(14), still constrains where they can legally go if it conflicts with this specific carve-out. This exemption was adopted with the rest of Article II's exempt-sign list by Ord. No. 1641 in 1996 and carried forward through the 2009 sign chapter rewrite (Ord. No. 1816) and later housekeeping amendments through 2024.
