Berwyn, IL Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Section 1476.06(B)(4) of the Berwyn Code of Ordinances covers political signs. The code defines one as a sign that endorses or opposes a candidate for public office or raises awareness regarding a public issue, so ballot question and issue signs are covered along with candidate signs. Location is open: political signs are permitted in all zoning districts. Size is the operative limit: no more than 16 square feet in area per sign and six feet in height. The paragraph sits in the list of temporary signs exempt from the permit requirement, so no application goes to the Building Director.

The political sign paragraph itself prints only location and size. It sets no per-lot count and no removal deadline, unlike the garage sale paragraph (two days before, one day after) and the real estate paragraph (seven days after a sale, lease or rental agreement is signed). Two general temporary sign rules in § 1476.06(A) still apply: temporary signs shall not be illuminated, and temporary non-commercial or political signs may not be related to the products or services sold on the premises.

Placement rules apply as well. Section 1476.03(C)(2) requires the property owner's prior consent for a sign on private property, and § 1476.03(C)(1) allows signs on public property only when placed by a government agency or the Building Director, with unauthorized signs removable without notice. In residential districts, no sign can exceed three feet in height within 25 feet of two or more intersecting streets, which is stricter than the six-foot cap and controls at corners. Snipe signs on utility poles, trees and similar locations are prohibited under § 1476.07(L).
