Bossier City, LA Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Political signs sit inside Section 8.2.2 of the Unified Development Code's list of signs that need no Sign Location Permit, but subsection I still writes specific limits into that exemption. A political sign has to identify and urge support for a particular candidate, political party, election issue, or non-commercial public cause to qualify. Size is capped at nine square feet, and that cap applies across the R-districts except the R-A district, which the UDC treats as a residence-agriculture zone with looser sign standards generally. Every political sign has to stay entirely outside the public right-of-way, meaning it cannot be staked in the strip between a homeowner's yard and the street or on any city-owned road shoulder.

Timing is spelled out to the day: a sign cannot be placed out earlier than 90 days before the election it references, and it has to come down within 14 days after that election, whether the candidate won or lost. Because the exemption sits in Section 8.2.2, compliant political signs escape the Sign Location Permit that Section 8.2.1 otherwise requires for on-premises signage, but they are not exempt from the structural and safety standards of Section 8.3.3 that apply to every sign in the city, including basic requirements that a sign stay in good repair and not create a hazard for drivers or pedestrians.

A sign that runs oversized, sits in the right-of-way, or lingers past the 14-day post-election window loses its no-permit status and becomes a standard code violation the Metropolitan Planning Commission's enforcement staff can act on.
