Commerce City, CO Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Commerce City's Land Development Code does not single out political or campaign signage; it regulates temporary yard signs as one content-neutral category under Sec. 21-8560, and the sign article states that it is not the intent of the article to regulate signs based on the content of their messages under Sec. 21-8110. That makes yard signs, including campaign and election signage, subject only to the general use standards in Table VIII-17. On a residential lot, yard signs need no permit, are allowed in unlimited number so long as no single sign exceeds 6 square feet and the combined area stays under 24 square feet, cannot exceed 4 feet in height, are never illuminated, and must sit back at least 5 feet from the property line.

Non-residential lots follow a different limit: one yard sign per building, up to 40 square feet, up to 8 feet tall, with the same no-illumination rule and a 25-foot minimum setback. There is no maximum time a yard sign may remain posted in either category, unlike other temporary sign types such as banners, which are capped at a fixed number of days per year. The only placement restriction is locational rather than content-based: Sec. 21-8560(1) bars yard signs from being erected or placed in parks, alleys, or in a street or other public right-of-way.

Because the standard applies equally to every yard sign regardless of message, campaign and issue-advocacy signs on private residential property are governed by these same number, size, height, and setback limits rather than any separate election-sign rule.
