Hudson, NH Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Hudson's sign ordinance, § 334-58, requires a permit issued by the Building Inspector and approved by the Zoning Administrator before any sign is erected, affixed, altered or moved anywhere in Town, but subsection B lists two dozen types of signs that can go up without one. Political campaign signs are one of them: § 334-58B(7) says only that they 'must comply with NH RSA 664:17 as may be amended from time to time,' which hands the substantive timing, size and placement rules for campaign signs to state election law rather than to the local Zoning Ordinance.

Because the political-sign exemption sits inside the no-permit list, Hudson does not require a Zoning Administrator sign permit application, a fee, or a Zoning Board of Adjustment special exception for a political sign the way it would for a permanent business sign; the sign is instead governed by whatever RSA 664:17 currently requires for campaign sign placement and removal deadlines. Other no-permit signs in the same list show how narrowly the exemption is drawn elsewhere in the ordinance: a temporary employment sign is capped at 12 square feet and 30 days, and a nonprofit event sign must be registered with the Zoning Administrator, but the political-sign exemption at B(7) carries no comparable size cap, registration step or duration limit of its own in the Hudson code itself.
