Lehi, UT Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Section 23.070.J places political signs on the list of eighteen sign types exempt from the permitting regulations of Chapter 23, alongside flags, decals, and public art. That exemption tracks the chapter's own stated purpose: Section 23.010.A lists preserving and protecting the constitutionally guaranteed right of free speech and expression in the display of signs as the first objective of the entire sign ordinance. Because political signs never enter the permit system, none of the size or duration limits that apply to temporary commercial signs under Section 23.100, such as the 30-day display cap, reach a campaign sign.

The exemption from permitting is not an exemption from every rule in the chapter, though. Section 23.050.J requires that any sign on private property have the property owner's written permission, so a sign planted in a neighbor's yard without asking is not authorized just because it is political. Section 23.050.C bars any sign other than a public or quasi-public sign from being placed within or extending into a public right-of-way, which reaches the strip between the sidewalk and the street, and Section 23.050.E caps any sign over three feet tall inside the clear-view triangle at a street intersection.

A political sign that ignores those placement rules can still be removed under the City's general sign-hazard authority in Section 23.050.I even though it never needed a permit to go up.
