Toledo, OH Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Toledo's sign code does not single out political or campaign signs; instead, election and other message-based yard signs fall under the content-neutral Temporary Sign standards of TMC § 1113.0511(A), which govern any ground-mounted sign of a temporary nature not attached to a building. A yard sign is permitted by-right, no Sign Permit is required, in every zoning district in the City, but display is capped at a six-month period under § 1113.0511(A)(1). In Residential zoning districts, a yard sign is limited to 6 square feet in area and 42 inches in height, with no cap on the number of signs a property may display under § 1113.0511(A)(2).

In Non-residential districts, the allowance is larger, up to 32 square feet and 6 feet in height, but limited to one yard sign per street frontage under § 1113.0511(A)(3). Every yard sign must be built of wood, corrugated plastic, or similar rigid, durable material, and kept free of missing paint, tears, fading, or collapse under § 1113.0511(A)(4). Placement is restricted too: a yard sign cannot sit in the public right-of-way, and any sign taller than 42 inches must be set back at least 18 feet from the curb under § 1113.0511(A)(5), a sightline rule aimed at driveways and intersections.

Because the section applies uniformly to any temporary ground sign regardless of message, a campaign sign gets exactly the same by-right treatment, size caps, and 6-month clock as a for-sale or garage-sale sign, Toledo does not grant political speech any special exemption from the size, height, or duration limits.
