Section 57A-3I defines window signs as those "painted or placed inside display windows," expressly excluding petroleum price signs, which the code regulates elsewhere. Two numeric caps apply together: a ratio limit of one sign per 12 linear feet of window, and an area limit of 25% of the total window area. Because both apply at once, a wide storefront window still can't exceed the 25% area ceiling even if it has room left under the linear-footage count. " This is stricter than other Chapter 57A categories, several of which permit shielded illumination under the chapter's general lighting rule in § 57A-13.

Because § 57A-3 signs aren't otherwise flagged as requiring a permit, a compliant window sign needs no permit or fee. Chapter-wide restrictions still layer on top: § 57A-14C bars any sign, including a window sign, from directing attention to a business, service or product sold elsewhere than on the premises, and § 57A-14A limits destructible outdoor materials like paper or cloth to temporary displays properly mounted on a frame. A Building or Zoning Inspector can cite an oversized, over-25%, or illuminated window sign as an illegal sign.
