Compton, CA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Interior window signage gets its own carve-out in Compton's Sign Classifications section. 4(a)(19) lets a business skip the sign permit process for window signs applied to the inside of the glass, but only within two numeric limits: total coverage cannot exceed 25% of the window's area, and the sign must be mounted at least 42 inches above the interior floor so it does not read as street-level clutter. The same paragraph separately caps neon window or facade signage at two units per facade, regardless of size.

A smaller, separate exemption at Sec. 4(a)(8) covers non-illuminated window signs of three square feet or less that identify a business, its hours, address or emergency information; anything larger than that but still under the 25% ceiling still qualifies as exempt only if it meets the 42-inch elevation and neon count rules. A window sign that exceeds 25% coverage, sits below 42 inches, or adds a third neon unit loses the exemption and must go through the standard sign permit review under Sec. 5, including compliance with the illumination limits of Sec. 6, which bar glare directed at surrounding properties.
