Table 4.08-1, Signs Exempt from Permit Requirements, lists permanent window signs with no numeric cap on sign count but a maximum area of 50 percent of each window's glass area. The table's other-conditions column limits the exemption to windows along a parcel's frontage or a tenant space's main entrance, so a sign in an interior or side window that does not face the public way or the entrance does not qualify for the same treatment. The exemption is unavailable on residential land uses altogether. The code's definitions section separately defines a window sign as one posted, painted, placed, or affixed in or on a window exposed to public view, and it extends that definition to an interior sign that faces a window and sits within 3 feet of it, which pulls signage set just inside the glass into the same coverage limit.

A retailer covering more than half of a storefront window with lettering or graphics has exceeded the exemption and needs a standard sign permit reviewed against the nonresidential sign standards in Table 4.08-2 instead, including that table's illumination rule requiring the light source to be screened as Section 14.04.05 requires.
