Pontiac, MI Soliciting & Door-to-Door: No-Knock Registry (2026)

Pontiac City Code § 6-62 makes it unlawful for any person to throw, deposit or distribute a commercial or noncommercial handbill on private premises once the occupant has posted a sign near the entrance stating "no trespassing," "no peddlers or agents," "no advertisement," or similar wording showing the occupants do not want to be disturbed or have handbills left. A verbal or written request from anyone on the premises has the same effect even without a sign. Section 6-60 separately limits distribution at any inhabited premises (posted or not) to handing a commercial handbill directly to the owner or another person present, unless the resident permits otherwise for noncommercial material.

Section 6-61 bars leaving handbills at premises that are apparent unoccupied, where a prior day's drop was never removed, or without the owner's permission. Section 6-63 layers a citywide curfew on top of the posted-sign rule: no commercial or noncommercial handbill may be distributed or deposited daily between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Anyone who wants to distribute handbills commercially for hire must also hold a distributor's license from the city clerk under §§ 6-64 through 6-66, with fees set by council resolution for one-day, one-week, three-month or one-year terms; the council can revoke a license under § 6-69 for a false application or a violation of the division.

Because Chapter 6 sets no standalone fine for § 6-62, enforcement falls to the Code's general penalty at § 1-25: a fine up to $500.00, up to 90 days in the city or county jail, or both, with a mandatory minimum $500.00 fine for anyone previously convicted of the same violation. Pontiac Police officers and code enforcement, defined broadly as "enforcement officers" elsewhere in the Code, respond to posted-sign complaints.
