Walnut Creek does not maintain a municipal No-Knock list. Residents may post No Soliciting signs at their door, which commercial solicitors are legally required to honor. The FTC National Do Not Call Registry covers phone solicitation but not door-to-door.
Unlike a small number of cities with formal No-Knock registries, Walnut Creek does not operate a municipal do-not-knock list. Instead, residents rely on self-posted signage. Under WCMC Chapter 5-6 and California Penal Code Β§602, a clearly posted No Soliciting or No Trespassing sign creates a legal obligation for commercial solicitors to bypass the residence. Solicitors who approach after observing such signs face permit revocation, $100-500 fines, and potential trespass charges. Best practices for signage: (1) place sign at main entrance visible from approach path, (2) clear lettering at least 1 inch tall, (3) include No Soliciting AND No Trespassing for strongest protection. Signs must be plainly visible β hidden or worn signs may not create enforceable notice. Religious and political canvassers are not legally required to honor No Soliciting signs under Martin v. Struthers (1943) and Watchtower Bible v. Stratton (2002), which established First Amendment protection for noncommercial door-to-door speech, though most organizations voluntarily comply. Phone solicitation is separately regulated under federal Do Not Call Registry (888-382-1222) and California Business & Professions Code Β§17592. Text message solicitation requires express written consent under TCPA.
