Islip, NY Special Events & Permits: Block Party Permits (2026)

Section 47A-2 of the Streets and Sidewalks chapter governs any social gathering for entertainment purposes that closes a portion of an Islip Town highway. No person or group may operate a block party without a permit from the Town Clerk, and the Clerk cannot issue one until two-thirds of the abutting houses have consented in writing, with each house getting one vote and, in a dispute, the vote decided by a majority of residents over 18 (§ 47A-2B). Only one block party per block is allowed per calendar year, and permit holders must agree to allow emergency ingress and egress for block residents.

Applications must be filed with the Town Clerk at least one month before the requested date and must state the applicant's contact information, the date and hours of the party, the street to be closed, the written consents of two-thirds of the block's households, and certification that no other block within three blocks has a pending application for the same date (§ 47A-2C). A $50 certified check guarantees cleanup, refundable only after the Superintendent of Highways inspects and approves, plus a separate nonrefundable $25 filing fee (§ 47A-2D).

No block party may charge any admission, food or beverage fee. Garbage and debris must be cleared from the block within 24 hours of the party's closing time.
