Fauquier County, VA Special Events & Permits: Parade Permits (2026)

Section 13-5 of the Fauquier County Code, in Chapter 13's traffic article, requires a permit issued by the Board of Supervisors or its duly authorized agent before any parade may occupy, march or proceed along a county highway. The only carve-out named in the section is for components of the Armed Forces of the United States and the military forces of the Commonwealth. The section also allows the county to impose additional regulations prescribed elsewhere in the Code as conditions of the permit, so an approved parade route can carry extra requirements such as timing, traffic control or insurance depending on what the Board's agent sets.

This sits alongside related traffic-safety provisions in the same chapter: Sec. 13-6 requires funeral procession vehicles to display illuminated headlamps and any identification the Sheriff prescribes, and Sec. 13-7 bars other drivers from cutting through a funeral or other authorized procession, with funeral-procession drivers required to stay near the right-hand edge of the roadway and follow closely and safely. Because Sec. 13-5 itself sets no dollar penalty, a violation falls back on Chapter 13's general penalty clause, Sec. 13-24, which applies whenever no other penalty is specified for offenses under this article of the chapter.
