Canton, OH Special Events & Permits: Park Event Permits (2026)

Section 539.09(a) bars anyone from holding an event or activity on park property that is open to, advertised to, involves rides, attractions, or creates any attractive nuisance for the general public without Park Commission approval. Subsection (b) requires event requests to reach the Commission at least thirty days before the event so it can be considered; anything submitted inside that thirty-day window may be denied outright by the Director. Subsection (c) narrows who may even apply: only nonprofit organizations, nonprofit tax-exempt groups, churches, or government organizations can be considered for approval to reserve a park, or any part of one, for a public event or fundraising activity, and an approved request must receive formal written approval in letter or permit form, not a verbal go-ahead.

The Commission can additionally require the event organizer to obtain further permits from other government agencies and to carry event liability insurance naming the City of Canton as an additional insured, per subsection (e). The Director retains the right under subsection (f) to revoke approval mid-stream if the organizer fails to comply with the Commission's conditions. Violating the section, such as running an unapproved public event, is a minor misdemeanor carrying suspension from park privileges under subsection (d). The rule sits in Chapter 539, Parks and Recreation, enacted by Ord.
