Lenexa, KS Special Events & Permits: Park Event Permits (2026)

Section 4-1-B-25 of the Lenexa zoning code sorts short-term events into Special Event Registrations, Type 1 Special Events and Type 2 Special Events. Item (B)(2)(g) of the Type 1 list is "Events in City Parks," defined as events open to the public that are not Type 2 Special Events and are held at a City-owned park, not including standard shelter rentals. The section does not describe how a standard shelter rental is booked, so this row covers the event permit, not the reservation.

The application is made to the Community Development Department on a City form with a fee set by the City Council. It must include a written description of the event, its duration, hours, expected attendance and any structures or signs, a sketch plan showing restrooms, trash receptacles, parking and activities, and written confirmation from the property owner. A complete application is due at least ten days before the start of a Type 1 event and at least 30 days before a Type 2 event, and the Community Development Director can waive the deadlines. The City approves, approves with conditions or denies within five days after the application date.

Insurance is a hard requirement: proof of liability and bodily injury coverage of at least $500,000.00 combined single limit per occurrence with a $1,000,000.00 aggregate, required for all Type 2 events and for Type 1 events held on public property or assisted by the City of Lenexa. The certificate must name the City as additional insured, reference the event and be dated within 30 days of it.

Type 2 events, such as concerts, fairs, carnivals and festivals of community or regional significance, go to the City Council. So do Type 1 applications the Director refers up or that are denied and appealed. City festivals and City sponsored events on City property need no permit.
