North Carolina requires pool barriers of at least 48 inches (4 feet) high for pools with more than 18 inches of water. Gates must be self-closing, self-latching, and open outward.
Under North Carolina Building Code and Cary's building regulations, all swimming pools containing more than 18 inches of water must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with pedestrian gates opening outward. Gate latches must be positioned to prevent children from reaching them (typically at least 54 inches above grade on the pool side). Fence openings must not allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. The barrier must completely surround the pool. Doors from the house that open directly to the pool area must have self-closing devices and alarms.
Non-compliant pool barriers fail building inspections. Existing pools found non-compliant may receive orders to install proper barriers.
