Residential pools in Largo must be enclosed by a barrier at least four feet high with self-closing, self-latching gates, or use one of the approved alternative safety features required by Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act.
Largo applies Florida Statutes Chapter 515 and the Florida Building Code to all new residential pools. Barriers must measure at least 48 inches high on the outside, contain no gaps that would allow a young child to crawl under or squeeze through, and be placed sufficiently away from the water's edge. Gates must open outward away from the pool, self-close, and self-latch with the release at least 54 inches above the floor. A wall of the dwelling may form part of the enclosure only if doors leading to the pool meet alarm or self-closing/self-latching requirements. Fence permits are reviewed under the Comprehensive Development Code.
A pool will not pass final inspection without a code-compliant barrier, and disabled or missing barriers can trigger code-enforcement fines and second-degree misdemeanor charges under Florida Statute 515.29.
