Pools in Las Cruces must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high with no gap a 4-inch sphere can pass. Gates must open outward and be self-closing and self-latching.
New Mexico Residential Code Section R4205, enforced by Las Cruces, governs pool barriers. The barrier must be at least 48 inches tall measured on the side facing away from the pool, and openings cannot pass a 4-inch sphere. Pedestrian access gates must open outward, away from the pool, and be self-closing and self-latching. Where the latch release is less than 54 inches from the bottom of the gate, it must sit on the pool side at least 3 inches below the top of the gate. A house wall may form one side of the barrier only if doors with direct pool access carry alarms.
A missing, short, or non-latching barrier fails the final inspection and bars lawful use of the pool; the city withholds approval until the enclosure complies with Section R4205.
