California Health and Safety Code 115920 through 115929 (the Swimming Pool Safety Act) applies in Sunnyvale via SMC Title 16. New and remodeled residential pools and spas require at least two of seven listed safety features. The most common is an enclosure at least 60 inches high surrounding the pool with gates that are self-closing, self-latching, open outward from the pool, and have latches at least 54 inches above the ground. Pool covers meeting ASTM F1346, alarms on doors leading to the pool, and approved safety covers are additional qualifying features. Openings in the barrier may not pass a 4-inch sphere. Existing pools altered after January 1, 2018 must come into compliance.
