Long Branch, NJ Swimming Pools & Spas: Pool Permits (2026)

City of Long Branch Code § 303-2 covers any 'private swimming pool,' which § 303-1 defines as a permanently installed pool or tank with an inside structural depth of more than 24 inches or a capacity over 2,000 gallons, built by a homeowner for personal, family or guest use. Before installing or constructing one, the owner must obtain a permit from the Construction Code Official and pay a $35 fee. The application has to include a description of the pool's size, shape, capacity and construction materials, its location on the lot, and the applicant's name and address.

The Construction Code Official will not issue the permit until the pool design complies with Chapter 174, the Uniform Construction Codes, and with Chapter 345, Zoning, and until the Health Department has approved the application in writing, a separate sign-off from the building permit itself. The article was adopted in the 1971 Code as Sec. 14-4 and carried forward into the current chapter numbering. Smaller inflatable or above-ground pools that do not exceed the 24-inch depth or 2,000-gallon threshold fall outside § 303-2's permit requirement, though they still have to meet Chapter 345's setback and fencing rules for accessory structures.
