Antioch residents must use Republic Services-issued carts only. Lids must close completely, carts may not exceed posted weight limits, and all waste must be bagged or contained inside the cart. Antioch Municipal Code Chapter 6-5 prohibits open piles, overfilled carts, and contamination between streams.
Antioch Municipal Code Chapter 6-5 and the Republic Services franchise agreement require that all residential garbage, recycling, and organics be contained in the hauler-issued wheeled carts. Customers may choose from 32-, 64-, or 96-gallon trash carts (different service rates apply); recycling and organics are typically 64- or 96-gallon. Cart lids must fully close — waste protruding above the rim is a violation and may be refused for collection. Weight limits are generally 200 pounds for 96-gallon, 150 pounds for 64-gallon, and 75 pounds for 32-gallon carts. Hazardous materials (batteries, paint, solvents, motor oil, e-waste, needles, propane tanks) are prohibited in all carts and must be taken to the Contra Costa County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility or scheduled for special pickup. Hot ashes, fluids, concrete, construction debris, tires, and items longer than 4 feet are also prohibited. Recycling carts must contain only accepted materials (see recycling subcategory) — contamination above a threshold triggers warning tags and potential cart removal under SB 1383 and the city's mandatory recycling ordinance. Organics carts must contain yard trimmings and food scraps only, in paper bags or loose (no plastic bags, including compostable plastic, unless certified BPI and accepted locally). Residents requiring more capacity may order additional carts (monthly fee) or request a bulk/extra pickup. Carts are the property of Republic Services; intentional damage or loss may be billed to the account.
