Brentwood residents must use the city-issued carts provided by Brentwood Disposal Service and keep them in good repair. Overfilled carts, bagged waste left outside carts, and damaged containers can result in non-collection. Lost or damaged carts are replaced by the hauler, typically at no charge for normal wear.
Brentwood Municipal Code section 8.16.060 requires that all solid waste, recyclables, and organic waste be placed in the franchised hauler's carts for collection. Residents may not substitute their own trash cans, plastic bags set on the curb, or unofficial containers. Lids must close fully; carts with protruding trash will be tagged and left uncollected until the excess is removed or an extra pickup is scheduled. Overweight carts (typically over 200 pounds for a 96-gallon) may also be skipped. Carts remain the property of Brentwood Disposal, and residents are responsible for reasonable care, though normal wear replacements (cracked wheels, broken lids) are provided free of charge. Stolen carts should be reported to both the hauler and Brentwood Police. Residents who generate more waste than the cart holds can request a larger cart (96-gallon maximum for garbage) or subscribe to an additional cart for an extra monthly fee. Commercial dumpster enclosures must meet the design standards in Brentwood Municipal Code Chapter 17, including a solid masonry enclosure with self-closing gates and a concrete apron. Enclosures must be locked when not in use if they serve multifamily or food-service properties to deter illegal dumping and scavenging. Violations of cart use rules are handled administratively with warnings before citations.
