Brentwood requires single-stream recycling via the blue cart and organics via the green cart under California SB 1383. Acceptable recyclables include paper, cardboard, rigid plastics, aluminum, and glass. Contaminated loads can be rejected or result in service charges to the property owner.
California Senate Bill 1383 (Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Reduction) requires every jurisdiction to provide organic waste recycling to all residents and businesses and sets a statewide goal of 75 percent diversion from landfill. Brentwood implements SB 1383 through Municipal Code Chapter 8.16 and its franchise agreement with Brentwood Disposal Service. The blue recycling cart accepts clean paper, cardboard (flattened), rigid plastics numbered 1 through 7, aluminum and steel cans, and clean glass bottles and jars. Unacceptable items include plastic bags, film plastics, polystyrene foam, food-soiled paper, batteries, electronics, and broken glass. Plastic bags can be dropped off at local grocery stores, and e-waste is accepted at Brentwood's annual community collection events and the Contra Costa household hazardous waste facility in Martinez. The green organics cart accepts food scraps (including meat, bones, and dairy), yard trimmings, food-soiled paper, and untreated wood. Plastic bags and compostable plastics are prohibited in the organics cart to maintain compost quality. Contaminated recycling or organics loads can trigger contamination notices under SB 1383 enforcement protocols, and repeated contamination after notice may result in cart removal or monetary penalties passed through from the hauler. Multifamily complexes and businesses must subscribe to organics service and post signage in service areas.
