Richmond uses single-stream recycling in the blue cart, collected weekly by Republic Services. California SB 1383 mandates organics recycling in the green cart, and AB 341/1826 require commercial recycling for most businesses. Contamination fees apply.
Richmond's recycling program is operated by Republic Services under the West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority (RecycleMore). The blue cart accepts single-stream recyclables: paper, cardboard (flattened), rigid plastics #1, #2, and #5 (bottles, jugs, tubs), glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans, and clean aluminum foil. NOT accepted: plastic bags, film plastic, styrofoam, shredded paper (unless bagged in clear plastic), pizza boxes with grease, ceramics, light bulbs, batteries, electronics, or sharps. Plastic bags can be returned to grocery stores. The green organics cart β mandatory statewide under SB 1383 effective January 1, 2022 β accepts food scraps (all types including meat, dairy, and bones), food-soiled paper, and yard trimmings. Richmond businesses generating 2+ cubic yards of solid waste per week must arrange organics and recycling service per AB 1826 and SB 1383. California Redemption Value (CRV) containers (plastic, glass, aluminum beverage containers marked CA CRV) can be redeemed at certified buyback centers; Richmond has several along Cutting Blvd and Macdonald Ave. Universal waste (batteries, fluorescent bulbs, electronics, paint) is banned from the trash and must go to the Richmond Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility (101 Pittsburg Ave) on designated drop-off days. Contamination in the blue or green carts is audited per SB 1383; repeat violations can trigger fees.
